FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a massive annual trek of over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with 250,000 zebra and other herbivores, across the savannas of East Africa. This circular route spans over 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) between Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve.  The migration is driven by the pursuit of fresh grasses and water, as the herds follow the rains throughout the year.

When is the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a continuous cycle, so there's always something to see somewhere year-round. However, the exact timing can vary slightly depending on the rainfall patterns. Here's a general breakdown of the migration seasons:

  • Southern Serengeti (Tanzania): Calving season (January to March) sees lush plains teeming with mothers and their young.

  • Central Serengeti (Tanzania): April to May, the herds move north following receding rains to greener pastures.

  • Western Corridor of the Serengeti (Tanzania): A prime viewing area in June to mi July. The herds concentrate here, grazing on rich grasslands and gathering near the Grumeti River for dramatic crossings.

  • Northern Serengeti (Tanzania) and Masai Mara (Kenya): June to October sees the wildebeest reach the northern reaches of the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, where they concentrate on the Mara River crossings. This is the most dramatic and well-known stage of the migration, with large herds battling strong currents and facing the dangers of predators lurking in the waters.
  • Back to Southern Serengeti (Tanzania): November to December witness the herds turning south again, prompted by the short rains in the southern plains.

Where can I see the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The two main destinations to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration are:

  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: This is the heart of the migration, offering year-round opportunities to see the herds. The southern plains are prime for calving season sightings, while the central and northern regions are ideal for witnessing the dramatic river crossings.

  • Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya:  From late July to August, the Maasai Mara boasts spectacular views of the wildebeest herds.

How long should I go on a safari to see the Great Wildebeest Migration?

There's no set minimum or maximum number of days for a migration safari.  Ideally, you'd want at least 4 days to fully appreciate the experience. This allows you to spend time in different areas and witness various aspects of the migration.
